Working with Challenging Youth & Engagement Strategies

Working with disaffected and challenging young people isn’t always easy but with patience and persistence, parents, teachers and youth workers can make a positive difference.

Some of the challenging behaviours we can expect, include:

• Arrogance
• Breaking trust
• Dishonesty
• Disrespect
• Ignorance
• Mental health issues
• Narcissism
• Selfishness
• Self-harm

Sometimes teens and children can cause situations to escalate very quickly with discussion breaking down into yelling, crying and running away from the situation.

However, young people are often more willing to listen and take advice on board than they are given credit for, especially when we make an honest effort to engage with them on their level rather than telling them what we think they should do.

Publications

How 2020 Rising Can Help

2020 Rising youth engagement training packages are designed to help teachers, youth workers and others to understand and develop tolerance to difficult behaviours while working steadfastly to support young people through change.

Our experienced trainers can help you to deal with those feelings of frustration, annoyance and anger that inevitably come up by talking through them. We can provide training on techniques that can be used to promote inclusion and de-escalate situations rather than isolate and inflame things.

Sometimes there isn’t a right answer to difficult situations and a lot will depend on the context. It may sometimes be better to wait before approaching a young person while in other cases an immediate response will be needed.

If there has been conflict between two or more youths, it can sometimes be best to deal with each young person separately. In another situation, speaking to the group as a whole can have a better outcome.

Whatever the obstacles, helping young people to re-engage with their education and communities is the best way to make a positive difference. To find out more about our training packages or to make a booking, please contact the friendly 2020 Rising team today.
